Few things in the summer are worse than needing air conditioning repair, especially when the heat becomes unbearable and it will be days before you can get a technician to your home. If your AC unit isn't running quite like it should, here are ways you can keep your home cool until you can get the appliance fixed so you can feel more comfortable no matter how hot it is outside.
Insulate your windows
The sun's rays can get into your home via your windows, so keep them well-insulated to help keep the heat out. You can do this by placing cardboard or dark garbage bags over your windows underneath your curtains. You can also install sun-blocking window shades to further enhance the cooling efficiency of the windows in your home.
Change/clean your AC filters
If your air conditioner still works but isn't blowing very cool air or has a weak air stream, then you can give it a boost by changing your AC filters. This can be done by taking the older filters out and putting new ones in (you can buy filters at your home improvement store), or you can simply spray out your current filters to remove dirt, debris, and pollen to help them filter air more efficiently for your home if you don't want to replace them until after your air conditioner is fixed.
Turn off attic ventilators
If you have a power attic ventilator in your home that automatically turns on when the temperatures in your attic reach a certain high, then try turning it off or turning up the heat threshold to prevent it operating as much. The attic ventilator may be stealing cooler air from your home, allowing heat to settle into the rest of your house. Keep the attic ventilator off until you can get your air conditioner repaired.
Close off unused rooms
If you have any rooms in your home you don't regularly use, keep their doors closed and place a rolled up towel underneath the doors to prevent heat from getting into other areas of your home. Sealing off these rooms also keeps cooler air that you want in other areas from escaping into spaces you don't use. If these rooms don't have doors, try hanging a curtain or old blanket over entryways to help keep these rooms from robbing cool air.
When you have an air conditioner that doesn't work the way it should, you can have a hard time keeping your home cool. Use these tips to keep your home cooler while you wait for the air conditioning repair technician to come to your door.
